How the index is built

Homes
Residential parcels with their own ground in the MassGIS statewide property tax parcels: one-, two- and three-family houses among them. Condominium units are not counted. Towns with fewer than 500 homes on record are left out.
Built before 1980
The share of a town’s homes on record whose year built is 1979 or earlier. The ranking sorts on this figure, highest first; a tie goes to the town with the older median year.
Median year built
The middle year built among the town’s homes on record.
Sold in 24 months
Sales over $1,000 recorded on a single home, in the 24 months to the month shown. Shown for the 41 towns whose record runs into the last twelve months.
